So cute in fact that she distracts me from my opening sentence and purpose of this post. Back on track…. One of my favorite mommy blogger’s, Mrs. Patti Jensen, does a weekly post called “Wordless Wednesday” where she only posts a picture with the title as a caption. I love it so much that I am stealing the idea! My first wordless wednesday is more like wordy wednesday but I promise in weeks to follow you will find more picture less word.

In the last couple of weeks, two of my favorite photographers have launched a formspring account. For many, or most, who are unfamiliar with this new dot com it is a website that allows anyone anywhere to ask questions anonymously or by setting up an account (if you set up an account you will be notified when your question is answered.) Both photographers, Image is Found and Jessica Valle, are absolute characters and have made this whole experience interesting. It did get me thinking, what if brands used this or something similar and allowed themselves to be personable open books?

…

Send and receive anonymous questions, and learn more about people you find interesting by following their answers.

Social media has opened up a new avenue where a brand has new and hopefully friendlier face. If I want to talk to Starbucks or Levi’s I know where to go on twitter. If I am interested in connecting with Lululemon then facebook is my first choice. There has been no better time for our favorite brands to become our literal friends and this new transparency is only going to get clearer.

I wouldn’t recommend a national brand like Target or local brand like Tony & Alba’s Pizza to use a formspring because it is hard to track and the interface is too simple. But I do love the idea of it. Personally, I can’t help but think how this would be a great type of medium for my dad. As a pastor in PDX he is constantly flooded with questions whether it be from his blogs or sermons or pesky daughters. I know in the past he wanted to hold Q&A sessions via twitter during services but was concerned with some of the blowback or inappropriateness that could be posted. (We were all 13 once!) Formspring would allow him to receive the questions and then approve them to be answered and becoming public.

We have seen reputations be nationally tarnished in a day or brands come out of no where in success. With each bad comes good and, overall, this culture loves the immediacy and opportunity of building relationships, connecting, and being heard. Brands are no longer out of reach but becoming more and more like our next door neighbors.

Immediately I grabbed my point and shoot camera, my pup, Jake, and my sister for some winter family portraits. Jake was not a happy camper and a bit of a spoil sport. But he couldn't put a damper on my fun!

I have never had a point and shoot camera, never. Instead I have gone from advanced film to digital slr, always caring around with me this bulky camera that no one knows how to use besides myself. Always the photographer, never the photographed. Sigh! But this Christmas my family sought to change that by giving me my very own pocket sized camera. I have taken some pictures and cringe at the quality. The images are beautiful for a pocket camera but nothing can beat a professional canon. However, I am not detoured and have put my editing skills to the test to level these suckers out.

…

With these images I went with a 70′s retro theme inspired by the photographs my parents try to hide from me in the garage…I am not sure why they regret their long shaggy hair with short shorts days. [And don't even get my started on my mom ] This editing can be mostly done in color balance by doing small adjustments to the hues. I wanted my colors to be toward the reds and greens to give it the old Polaroid look. Other edits were found in adjusting the levels and a bit of lens correction.

This is a new era. A new time. A new day. And even a new story.

The Whale Hunt is an experiment in human storytelling.

…

Jonathon Harris spent 9 days in Alaska living with a family of Eskimos. Along with a friend who acts as his photographer their entire journey is documented in 3,214 images.

[9 days x 24 hours x 60 mins]/3214 images = 4 pictures per minute

Instead of going through and selecting only his favorites he created a website and sequenced every image.

The purpose of this project was threefold:

First, to experiment with a new interface for human storytelling. The photographs are presented in a framework that tells the moment-to-moment story of the whale hunt. The full sequence of images is represented as a medical heartbeat graph along the bottom edge of the screen, its magnitude at each point indicating the photographic frequency (and thus the level of excitement) at that moment in time. A series of filters can be used to restrict this heartbeat timeline, isolating the many sub stories occurring within the larger narrative (the story of blood, the story of the captain, the story of the arctic ocean, etc.). Each viewer will experience the whale hunt narrative differently, and not necessarily in a linear fashion, constructing his or her own understanding of the experience.

Second, to subject myself to the same sort of incessant automated data collection process that I usually write computer programs to conduct (in previous projects like We Feel Fine, Lovelines, Universe, 10×10, and Phylotaxis). Much effort is spent making computers understand what it’s like to be human (through data mining and artificial intelligence), but rarely do humans try to see things from a computer’s perspective. I was interested in reaching some degree of empathy with the computer, a constant thankless helper in my work.

Third, to take an epic personal experience from the physical world and translate it optimally to the Internet, so that many people can share it.

The final outcome, a success. A Whale Hunt is a prime example of a new way to tell stories. Like yesterdays Adage.com said “stories we create and consume are no longer defined by time, space or material object.”

Candyland was always a favorite game of mine. I always wanted to be Princess Lolly while my sister loved Queen Frostine. Overtime I was soon bitten by the “be like my sister” bug and would rig the game so I would be Queen Frostine. But I never forget my roots.

—

One of the latest studio assignments for my photography class was a model shoot. Princess Lolly came into full effect and I knew I wanted a Candyland catalog shoot. I had the perfect bubble gum pop model and thankfully Halloween had just passed so getting the props on the cheap was easier than I had imagined. I think with a few more editing adjustments these images will be all that I hoped for but for now I really enjoy them.

My last term of undergraduate work is underway and the projects are rolling in for completion. This week marks the end of my studio photography’s “Glass with Attitude” project. We were to select a clear glass object and create a unique setting for it. My favorite image is below and by the end of this week I will put up my top 5.

Underwater never looked so good but first I would like to give a shout out to Nemo for making it into another image of mine, this time in plastic form. You’re my boy, blue!

In my previous post I mentioned my current exploration of a new photography series. After much thought and talks with people I wanted to include, I have decided to kill the series. Not because I do not like the idea (I definitely do) but because I was putting my feelings on my subjects. Instead of letting them speak to me, I was wanting my message to come across. Below you will find two images from the test shoot that will serve as a single image (only because I couldn’t decide which one was best).

Untitled

I have started playing with a new photo series and it will either be great or bust. Mostly depending on my security within it. The idea behind it is veiled truths. Desires to be open, honest, vulnerable contrasted against the fear of being that person. What barriers do we create to protect ourselves and are these walls actually holding us back from exactly what we want?

The direction of this series is suppose to be sad, to say the least. One description I got when testing the images was “haunting” and I felt that fit what I was trying to reach perfectly.

I have the test images of myself to show shortly but this is not intended to be a self portrait series. The hard part will not be in finding the right models or their “nakedness” but in what they reveal through that.
